Here’s our guide to the very best things to do on Hawaii Island—your must-see list for an unforgettable getaway.

Volcanic Wonders & Stargazing

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

No trip to the Big Island is complete without visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Home to Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.Visit the steam vents, sulphur banks, and lava tubes and Kīlauea overlook. Come back at night to the overlook to see the glowing lava.

Mauna Kea Summit & Stargazing

For another unforgettable experience, head up to the Mauna Kea summit. At nearly 14,000 feet above sea level, this is one of the best stargazing locations in the world. If you want to do the full summit, we recommend a guided tour as most rental cars are not allowed and must pass inspection. The visitor centre followed by a short hike offer a wonderful spot to view the sunset. Enjoy the sunset above the clouds, followed by a sky filled with constellations, is a memory you’ll carry forever just don’t forget your sweater!

Waterfalls, Beaches & Coastal Beauty

Akaka Falls & Waipi‘o Valley

The Big Island is home to some of Hawaii’s most stunning waterfalls. A short hike at Akaka Falls State Park reveals a 420-foot cascade surrounded by lush rainforest. Or even closer to Mina Lani drive to the Waipi‘o Valley Lookout, where steep cliffs lead to the ocean. Bring your hiking boots and water and you can hike down to the black sand beach.

Black-Sand & White-Sand Beaches

From Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach, famous for Hawaiian green sea turtles, to the white sands of Hapuna Beach, the island’s coastlines are as diverse as they are beautiful. Each beach offers a different kind of paradise, whether you want to sunbathe, swim, or snorkel.

Manta Ray Night Snorkel

One of the island’s most unique experiences is a night swim or diving with manta rays. Underwater lights attract plankton, which in turn draw in the mantas, creating a surreal, bucket-list adventure. We recommend the night swim out of Mauna Kea but book early as it books up!

Culture & Exploration

Kealakekua Bay

This protected marine sanctuary is not only one of the best snorkelling spots in Hawaii but also rich in history. It is the site of Captain Cook’s first landing in Hawaii.

Kona Coffee

The volcanic slopes of Kona produce some of the most famous coffee in the world. Tour a Kona coffee farm, meet the growers, and sample freshly roasted beans.
