Whale Watching on the Big Island

Each winter, humpback whales return to the warm waters of Hawaii to mate, give birth, and raise their young. From December through April, the Kohala Coast offers some of the most accessible whale watching in the Pacific, with sightings possible from shore, from the water, and from the deck of a boat.

01 From Shore

Shore-Based Whale Watching

On calm mornings, humpbacks are often visible from the coastline without leaving the resort. Breaches, spouts, and tail slaps can be spotted from several locations within easy reach of Mauna Lani. Binoculars and polarized sunglasses improve visibility considerably.

  • Mauna Lani Beach Club The protected cove offers calm, clear water and open sightlines. An ideal starting point for an early morning walk with whales in view.
  • Anaehoʻomalu Bay Known locally as A-Bay, the long pier and open shoreline provide an elevated vantage point. Approximately ten minutes from Mauna Lani.
  • Hapuna Beach One of the finest beaches on the island, with broad ocean views well-suited to scanning for whale activity along the horizon.

Guided Whale Watching Tours

For a closer encounter, several operators along the Kohala Coast run dedicated whale watching excursions during peak season. Morning departures offer the calmest conditions; sunset cruises combine whale sightings with views of the coastline at golden hour. Advance booking is recommended throughout January and February.

  • Hawaii Ocean Sports Based at Waikoloa Beach Resort, approximately ten minutes from Mauna Lani. Large catamaran with open decks and multiple departure times.
  • Kohala Divers Small-group tours departing from Kawaihae Harbor, approximately fifteen minutes away. A more personal experience with attentive guides.
  • Body Glove Cruises Departing from Kailua-Kona, roughly forty minutes south. Known for premium vessels and onboard hydrophones that let guests listen to whale song.

Kayak and Paddleboard Encounters

For guests who prefer a quieter, more immersive experience, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at the Mauna Lani Beach Club and at A-Bay. Paddling just offshore on a still morning, with a humpback surfacing nearby, is one of those moments that defines a Big Island stay.

Local operators also offer guided kayak whale-watching excursions for those who would prefer to go with an experienced guide. Equipment and instruction are provided.

Federal guidelines require vessels and watercraft to maintain a minimum distance from humpback whales. Reputable tour operators observe these regulations. When paddling independently, give whales space and let them approach on their own terms.
